How is Jing different from Camtasia Studio and Snagit?

Jing is a streamlined approach to content creation.  It is perfect for adding a quick and simple visual elements to your day-to-day conversations. If you need more, Jing allows you to export your images or video to Snagit or Camtasia Studio for further editing.

Camtasia Studio is a professional-level screen recording and editing application. Snagit is a full-featured screen capture and editing software. Both applications can share content to Screencast.com, just like Jing, but also have a wider range of editing features and more ways to share your media.

What is the difference between Jing and Jing Pro?

Jing is free. Jing Pro is our premium version, which offers more flexibility and customization options. With Jing Pro you can record webcam video, deliver HD quality video for the web, remove Jing branding from your newly recorded content, and share your screencasts on popular online video sites like YouTube.

Both free Jing and Jing Pro include a complimentary Screencast.com account with 2GB of storage and 2GB of monthly bandwidth.

What is Screencast.com?

Screencast.com is TechSmith’s content hosting site that Jing uses to securely host your screen captures and screen recordings. To make sharing instant and easy, we give every Jing user 2GB of free space and 2GB of free monthly bandwidth on Screencast.com. It’s perfect for the kind of images and videos you’ll want to make with Jing.

What is storage?

Storage is used every time a Jing screen capture or recording is uploaded to Screencast.com. If you choose to upload your Jing screen capture or recording and get a link to share, your media is going to Screencast.com. So, if you create a 20 megabyte video (screen recording) and upload it, you will use 20 megabytes of you Screencast.com storage.

What is transfer bandwidth?

Transfer bandwidth is a measure of the amount of data that can be transmitted through a connection over a given amount of time. In the case of Screencast.com, transfer bandwidth is used when people view your content.

If you have a lot of people, viewing a lot of content, you might reach your bandwidth limit. Screencast.com will send you an email letting you know if you are getting close to your limit, you will also find this information within your Screencast.com account. Just like with storage, if you have one person view your 20 megabyte video, they have used 20 megabytes of your transfer bandwidth.

What if I need more space or monthly bandwidth?

Most users find the free 2GB of storage and 2GB of monthly bandwidth to be plenty, but an upgraded Screencast.com account is available should you need more.

What image and video formats does Jing produce?

Image/Video formats from Jing: PNG images, SWF video, or H.264 video

Images are always in PNG format. Jing videos are always in SWF format, while Jing Pro videos can be in either SWF or MPEG-4 AVC.

Do Jing and Jing Pro both have 5-minute video recording limits?

Yes. Both Jing and Jing Pro limit your video recording time to 5-minutes.

Jing is for quick and easy visual communication – to simply capture and share what you see. It was designed to be a streamlined and efficient screen capture and recording application. For people looking for longer screen recording and editing functionality we recommend considering Snagit or Camtasia Studio, which are full-featured screen capture, screen recording, editing and production software applications.

Does Jing offer Tech Support?

Yes. Jing offers free technical support, (support.techsmith.com) and this is the best way to resolve issues such as firewall problems, installation issues, and other tough issues.

What webcams does Jing support?

While we can’t test every possible webcam and driver, we’ve had great success with the iSight camera for Macintosh and Logitech cameras on Windows. We don’t recommend using HD cameras or camcorders in conjunction with Jing Pro. Please note: Mac OS X Leopard (10.5 or later) is required for webcam.
